Secondary Programme

Secondary Training

THE SCITT EMPHASISES THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAINEES DEVELOPING THEIR SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THEORY AND PEDAGOGY RELATED TO THE SUBJECT THEY ARE TRAINING IN.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The secondary course is a one-year full-time course, which runs from September through to July, leading to a Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) and Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Our post-graduate teacher training programme operates within the South West London area. The lead school is Glenthorne High School which is part of The Willow Learning Trust. The secondary route offers first class training across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (11-16 year olds). Successful applicants will work in at least two of our participating schools in both key stages. There will also be an opportunity to experience post 16 provision, special school, PRU and a primary school.

PROFESSIONAL STUDIES

Each week trainees will be supported with training sessions that will demonstrate the Teaching Standards, learning theories, and subject knowledge of the broad National Curriculum. The training sessions are delivered by a range of specialists including Headteachers, Lead Teachers, Advanced Skills Teachers, external and internal Consultants; all experts in their field.

'The course moves from the fundamentals of pedagogy to ensuring that trainees acquire a rich understanding of how to teach their subject or phase" - Ofsted 2021

SUBJECT STUDIES

All subjects have hubs which are led by expert practitioners in their field.  Trainees visit hubs each week whilst not on practice, so they are prepared effectively to teach their specialist subject developing subject knowledge and subject specific pedagogy. Our hubs are integral to the excellent outcomes of our trainees; we invest heavily in them because we know it makes the trainees the best teachers they can be.

'Trainees are especially well-supported in developing their subject knowledge" - Ofsted 2021

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Trainees are assigned an experienced mentor within each school that they are placed. They are responsible for supporting and guiding the trainee’s professional development and ensuring that they have the opportunities that they need within the school to maximise job opportunities and future career developments.

Training in school progresses from observing and working alongside an experienced teacher to taking full responsibility, firstly for groups, and later for the whole class during the academic year to enable you to become a confident, outstanding teacher.

WRITTEN TASKS AND ASSIGNMENTS

To support own research, reflection and meeting of the Teaching Standards, trainees will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence.  In order to help meet the standards trainees will be required to complete tasks which will enable them to develop an understanding of what it means to be an outstanding teacher.  This will be supported by our dedicated team of professionals.
